If you want one answer, Napoli is still my best overall pick: strong, unique, durable and useful in many modes. If your priority is earning Credits, a Tier IX premium such as Pommern, Kearsarge, Black or Groningen makes more economic sense than a Tier X special ship.
Coal is one of the nicest resources in World of Warships: you can earn it without paying, then turn months of accumulation into a Premium or Special ship.
The problem starts when you finally reach 200,000, 250,000 or 300,000 Coal and the Armory presents enough options to turn a simple purchase into a small procurement committee.
So this guide answers the useful question: which coal ship is actually worth buying in 2026?
This is not a raw damage ranking. I am weighing battle impact, fun, difficulty, economy and, above all, what you actually want the ship to do.

Before buying: the 2026 Holiday Convoy changes the math
Normally this would simply be a question of which ship gives you the best return for your Coal.
In September 2026 there is one complication: the 2026 Holiday Convoy also lets you convert Coal into Convoy Tokens at 10 Coal = 3 Tokens.
260,000 Coal, the current price of several Tier X Armory ships, is therefore worth 78,000 Convoy Tokens.
I am not telling you to convert all your Coal. I am telling you to compare both uses before clicking Purchase. If you have wanted a ship for months, an event should not derail that plan. If you are already unsure which ship you want, waiting is usually the smarter move.
Napoli: my best overall Coal ship
If I had to recommend one Coal ship without knowing your account, I would pick Napoli.
Its strengths stay relevant even when the meta shifts: excellent cruiser survivability, good mobility, torpedoes, Smoke to create or break engagements, and highly accurate SAP secondaries.
Napoli works in Randoms, Ranked, Brawls and PvE. It can absorb pressure, create space and become a serious problem once engagement ranges shrink.
The one caveat is economy: it is a Tier X Special ship, not a Tier IX Premium. If your main problem is Credits, there are better investments.
Pommern: Credits, Operations and Asymmetric Battles

The Armory currently lists it for 180,000 Coal.
Open Pommern profile →Pommern is much easier to recommend if you mainly play Operations, Asymmetric Battles, Brawls or Ranked than if you spend all your time in long-range Randoms.
It combines Tier IX Premium economy, secondaries, Hydroacoustic Search, torpedoes and a hull that can take punishment when angled properly.
Its main battery is inconsistent and aggressive play is harder to force in passive Randoms. In PvE and smaller formats, its toolkit becomes far easier to exploit.
Kearsarge: my preferred Tier IX Premium for Randoms
Kearsarge
Twelve 406 mm guns plus an attack squadron.

The twelve 406 mm guns deliver serious salvo weight, while the squadron can attack, force manoeuvres or provide useful information at key moments.
The classic mistake is spending too long flying aircraft and forgetting that your enormous battleship hull is still sailing toward whatever disaster you left on autopilot.
Marceau: monstrous if you know what you are doing
Marceau remains one of the strongest Coal destroyers, but recommending it without context is dangerous.
Speed, rate of fire and destroyer-killing pressure are outstanding. Concealment is not, shell arcs need practice, and the lack of Smoke means your positioning errors do not come with an Undo button.
Black: the Ranked specialist
Black is expensive, but Smoke + Surveillance Radar remains an obnoxiously effective combination.
In smaller-team modes, especially Ranked, it gives you enormous cap control. You can force enemy destroyers out of Smoke, spot them for your team and control space without needing to win every fight through raw DPM.
Groningen: if DPM is your religion

Pure gunboat: guns, Smoke, Hydroacoustic Search and zero torpedoes.

Its DPM is excellent and Tier IX Premium status makes it attractive for Credits. The tradeoff is absolute: no torpedoes. When something pushes your Smoke, there is no emergency wall of fish waiting to solve your planning mistake.
Budget picks: Scharnhorst '43 and Bayard

Fast, aggressive, torpedoes and excellent fun-per-Coal value.

Bayard
Fast light cruiser with excellent DPM, now permanently available for Coal.
Open ship profile →Scharnhorst '43 is one of the easiest purchases to justify if you do not want to save all the way to 250k Coal. At 75,000 Coal, it delivers speed, torpedoes and aggressive gameplay at a fraction of Tier X prices.
Bayard became permanently available for 110,000 Coal in Update 15.5. It is fast and has excellent DPM, but is far less forgiving. This is a much better pick for someone who already understands light cruisers than for a first Premium ship.
Salem, Moskva and other alternatives
Salem
Des Moines-style DPM and a powerful Repair Party. Strong, but less unique if you already own Des Moines.

Excellent zone control and reliable long-range guns, but huge and easy to spot.
Open ship profile →Salem is still strong: rapid guns, American AP and a very powerful Repair Party. Its problem is not power, but uniqueness if you already own Des Moines.
Moskva remains a very good control platform with Surveillance Radar and accurate artillery. Its size and concealment punish sloppy positioning.
Yoshino works for players who love long-range kiting. Tromp is highly unique with its airstrikes. Forrest Sherman is another excellent gunboat. None of them are bad; I simply find the picks above easier to defend as a first Coal purchase.
What I would not buy first
Defence at 415,000 Coal
Defence may be interesting, but 415,000 Coal is a huge opportunity cost. It is not a rational first purchase unless you know exactly why you want it.
Großer Kurfürst just because you want a German Tier X
GK can still work, especially in PvE, but Pommern offers Tier IX Premium economy, torpedoes and a lower price. For many players, Pommern is simply the better first German Coal ship.
A carrier or submarine if you do not already play the class
Malta, Max Immelmann and U-4501 can all perform. That is not a reason to discover an entire class after spending months of Coal. Learn the class first, then buy the Special ship if you know you will use it.

How should you use the 25% resource-ship coupon?
If your resource-ship coupon is available, use it on a purchase you already intended to make.
A 260,000-Coal Napoli drops to 195,000 Coal with a 25% discount, saving 65,000 Coal.
Do not let the coupon create the purchase. Buying a mediocre fit because “the coupon will expire” still costs more than buying nothing.
Final verdict: which Coal ship should you buy in 2026?
For most players, my starting order is simple:
- Napoli if you want the best overall ship and Credits are not your problem.
- Pommern if you want a profitable Tier IX Premium focused on PvE and close-range fun.
- Kearsarge if you want a highly influential Tier IX Premium for Randoms and do not mind hybrids.
- Marceau if you are already an experienced destroyer player.
- Black if Ranked and cap control are your priorities.
The important point is unchanged: do not buy a ship simply because you finally have enough Coal.
Coal does not expire. A bad purchase can sit in your port for years reminding you that patience was free.
