WoWS Public Test: access and rewards

Installation, opening periods, live-account rewards, ship trials, practice uses, and Public Test limitations.

Key takeaway

The Public Test can grant live-account rewards, lets you try ships and builds, and provides a place to practise mechanics without using live-account resources. It opens during announced sessions and content can change before release.

01

Why use the Public Test

The Public Test server, often shortened to PT or PTS, lets players try part of an upcoming update before it reaches the live server. Developers use it to observe stability, bugs, and feedback, but that is not the only reason a player should care.

The test account is separate from normal progression. Ships, Credits, Doubloons, and Premium time granted for testing generally remain on that server, allowing you to spend, reset, equip, and experiment without damaging the live account.

Some PT combat missions explicitly grant rewards on the live server. Keep the distinction clear: starting resources fund experiments on PT; only rewards identified as live-server rewards are transferred to the normal account.

02

Benefit one: earn rewards on the live server

For every session, World of Warships publishes an announcement listing missions and rewards. These change between updates and may include Community Tokens, Coal, Credits, Free XP, Elite Commander XP, containers, permanent camouflages, or Doubloons.

The value is strongest when early missions take little time. A login, one battle, or a modest Base XP threshold may sometimes unlock the first reward. Longer chains are worthwhile only when their time-to-reward ratio fits your live-account goals.

Before playing, read the current official article and note the opening window, eligible battle types, and reward destination. A resource shown in the PT Port is not automatically a live-server reward.

  • Start with short, guaranteed missions.
  • Check whether the reward goes to live or remains on PT.
  • Do not grind for hours for an item you do not need.
  • Read each phase announcement because objectives may change.

03

Benefit two: try ships before spending weeks grinding

Public Tests usually provide an accelerated economy: major research discounts, abundant resources, test Premium time, highly trained Commanders, and a selection of unlocked ships. For PT 15.4, the official announcement listed all researchable Tier VI and VIII ships with 21-point Commanders, alongside discounts and starting resources. A later session may offer a different roster.

Compare ballistics, mobility, workload, and equipment before committing XP and Credits to a line.

Evaluate positioning, disengagement, ballistics, and the ship's role. One high-damage battle is not enough to judge a line.

  • Compare two ships under similar conditions.
  • Use modules and consumables you would run on live.
  • Include an average or difficult battle, not only a bot massacre.
  • Write down the drawbacks before beginning the live grind.
04

Benefit three: learn mechanics without economic pressure

On live, tests consume Credits, bonuses, and retraining time. The Public Test account lets you practise a mechanic or build without using live-account resources.

Use it to compare AP and HE, Radar range, Hydro, firing detectability, destroyer routes, upgrades, and Commander skills.

Public Test battles do not always match live conditions: population is lower, bots are more common, and players test different content. Use it to understand tools and ships, not to predict win rate.

05

Preview upcoming content, with an important warning

PT may offer new modes, events, interfaces, maps, or mechanics before release. This helps you understand an update before a time-limited event begins.

However, being mentioned in the announcement does not guarantee that every ship or feature is playable. The 15.4 article explicitly stated that some announced ships would not be available during PT. Values and mechanics are provisional and may change, be delayed, or be removed.

Treat PT as work in progress. Recheck every statistic after the live update before publishing a definitive guide.

  • Read the exact testable-content list.
  • Treat all values as provisional.
  • Label screenshots with the test version.
  • Report bugs when a feedback channel is provided.

How to install Public Test through Wargaming Game Center

In Wargaming Game Center, install Public Test as a separate game instance. Check the storage estimate shown by the launcher.

Labels may vary slightly by launcher language, but the route is generally the same.

  • Open Wargaming Game Center and sign in with the Wargaming account linked to your main WoWS account.
  • Select the World of Warships tab.
  • Open Game Settings and choose Install additional game instance.
  • Choose Public Test as the region or instance.
  • Select the installation folder, confirm free space, and install.
  • When complete, select the Public Test instance and press Play.
  • Use the same main-account credentials so eligible missions can be attributed correctly.

07

When Public Test does not appear

The most common reason is that the server is closed. A client may be installed or preloaded before the phase begins. Check the official article for start and end times in your time zone.

If the session is open, restart WGC, update the launcher, and confirm that you are looking at World of Warships instances. Wargaming documents the additional-instance option for adding another installation or region.

Steam and Epic users should check the current session instructions because access can differ. Do not casually create a second account with a different email if you expect live rewards to reach your normal account.

  • Check dates before troubleshooting.
  • Restart and update WGC.
  • Use Check and Repair if the instance is installed but fails to launch.
  • Keep the same account identity across PT and live.

A 90-minute testing plan

Start the session with one question: a ship, build, mechanic, or mission to test.

Check live-reward missions first, then spend the remaining time on one ship, line, or mechanic. Record conclusions immediately.

Who benefits most from Public Test?

New players can preview higher tiers without spending live resources, but access does not equal mastery. Use it to see where a line leads, not to skip mid-tier learning.

Returning players can check interfaces, skill changes, modes, and ships added during their absence before playing live battles.

Experienced players can compare upgrades, prepare a line, analyze an event, or collect live rewards. Their best use is usually targeted: one hypothesis, a few battles, one conclusion.

  • New player: preview without confusing access with mastery.
  • Returning player: rebuild references before serious play.
  • Regular player: test a specific line, build, or mechanic.
  • Content creator: prepare material while clearly labeling provisional data.
10

Limitations before downloading

Public Test requires another installation and opens during limited windows. Battles may contain more bots and players testing content rather than playing for the win.

Test progress can be reset or recopied depending on the session. PT resources do not become live resources. Live rewards follow only the published mission conditions.

A ship tested with abundant resources and a 21-point Commander may behave differently during normal progression. Public Test helps with decisions but does not reproduce the live grind.

11

Verdict: one short session may be enough

Public Test is worth using to collect announced live rewards, preview a line, learn a mechanic without economic pressure, prepare for an update, or rebuild habits after a long absence.

One or two sessions can complete the missions you want and test a mechanic. Check the session announcement because dates, ships, resources, and rewards change with each update.
