Warspite in Ranked: guide, build, and tactics

Warspite combines accurate 381 mm guns, useful overmatch, an improved heal, and remarkable handling. She pays for those strengths with short range, painfully slow turrets, and thin outer plating that absorbs full penetrations and fires.

Key point

Warspite is a strong Tier VI Ranked support battleship. Play her at roughly 9–13 km, pre-aim the turrets before contact, keep AP loaded by default, and punish cruisers as soon as they expose broadside. Her citadel is hard to reach, but her hull is not invulnerable: she burns and takes heavy normal-penetration damage.

01

Why Warspite works in Ranked

Ranked uses smaller teams, so every accurate salvo carries more weight. Warspite suits that format because her eight 381 mm guns are reliable, her AP threatens cruisers through many angles, and her improved Repair Party keeps her useful after the first exchange.

She is not a pursuit battleship. Her job is to support the capture area, hold a central or inside lane, and create a zone where an enemy cruiser cannot turn without risking immediate deletion. A useful mid-map position matters more than a long trip around the outside flank.

Smaller teams also expose her weaknesses. A late rotation, turrets pointing the wrong way, or an isolated push can decide the match. Warspite needs a plan before the first shot.

03

Accurate guns and overmatch that ignores angles

Warspite fires only eight shells, but her accuracy partly offsets the low barrel count. Her 2.0 sigma and modified dispersion produce more dependable groups than most Tier VI battleships. Across my 37-battle sample, her main battery achieved a 41% hit rate.

Her 381 mm calibre overmatches armour up to 26 mm. A Tier VI cruiser cannot rely on bow plating to bounce her AP, even while facing her or holding a shallow angle. Her shells can pass through the end plating and reach more valuable sections.

Enemy cruisers are the first priority. At 10–14 km, a broadside mistake can become a Devastating Strike. Aim at the waterline below the funnels against a clean broadside. Against an angled cruiser, raise the aim toward the bow, stern, or upper belt instead of waiting for a perfect citadel.

04

A protected citadel inside a very vulnerable hull

Warspite is difficult to citadel when she holds a sensible angle. Her thick belt and internal protection handle shells aimed directly at the citadel. That protection does not make her durable across the entire hull.

Her outer plating is thin, and her superstructure catches full penetrations with alarming regularity. The experience resembles République: few citadel ribbons against her, but repeated normal penetrations can remove 10,000–20,000 HP without dramatic feedback. Fires are the other major source of damage.

Angle Warspite to protect the belt, but keep moving. A stationary bow-in Warspite becomes an easy target for HE, bombs, and superstructure penetrations. Her defence comes from angling, speed changes, and rudder use rather than blind faith in the turtleback.

05

Short DCP and improved heal: survival depends on timing

Warspite carries a cruiser-style Damage Control Party: only 5 seconds of action time, followed by a 60-second cooldown. She gets the consumable back sooner than many battleships, but her immunity window is brief.

Do not repair one fire automatically while several enemies still have shots. Fire damage is recoverable through the heal. Save DCP for flooding, multiple fires, a disabled critical module, or the moment when Warspite can actually disengage.

Her improved Repair Party is one of her defining strengths. A full eligible charge restores just over 9,000 HP. In Ranked, that heal lets Warspite take an early trade, break line of sight, and return with enough HP to influence the final minutes.

06

A hilarious turning circle on a dreadnought

Warspite turns remarkably tightly for a battleship. Her handling helps spoil enemy aim, avoid torpedoes, and present a better angle quickly. The trap lies in her turrets: the hull rotates far faster than the guns.

With Brisk and the speed signal, she can reach roughly 27.5 knots while undetected. She does not become a battlecruiser, but the extra speed changes Ranked openings. Warspite reaches a central position sooner and can begin rotating before a flank collapses.

Grease the Gears is close to mandatory. Even with the skill, point the turrets toward the next likely target before changing course. Turning first and waiting for the guns afterward is a very organised way to spend a minute without firing.

Recommended Ranked build

SlotRecommended choiceReason
1Main Armaments Modification 1Protects the turrets and main battery
2Damage Control System Modification 1Reduces fire and flooding risk
3Aiming Systems Modification 1Strengthens her best weapon: reliable salvos
4Damage Control System Modification 2Shortens fires, her main survivability problem

For a Ranked commander, prioritise Grease the Gears, Brisk, Adrenaline Rush, Basics of Survivability, Concealment Expert, and Fire Prevention Expert. Gun Feeder and Priority Target fit well with the remaining points.

Brisk is not decoration. The skill helps Warspite offset her base speed and claim a useful position before contact. Fire Prevention and Basics of Survivability reduce the damage that bypasses her protected citadel most easily: fires.

08

Opening play: take the inside lane, not the map border

Warspite lacks the speed and range to repair a poor route. Avoid the extreme outside flank, where she may spend half the battle sailing back toward useful targets. Choose a central or inside lane, outside the capture area but close enough to support the destroyer.

  • Pre-aim the turrets during the opening movement.
  • Stay roughly 9–13 km from the likely contact area.
  • Use an island to close one firing lane, not to trap the ship.
  • Do not become the first ship entering the cap.
  • Keep enough water to turn without showing a complete broadside.

Her 16.3 km range is poor. The Spotting Aircraft temporarily solves that problem, but she remains a mid-range battleship. Use the aircraft to reach a fleeing target or maintain pressure during a rotation, not to sit at the back.

09

Target priority and ammunition

AP remains the default ammunition. Load HE when a destroyer is likely to appear, when a higher-tier battleship stays fully angled, or when no dependable AP penetration is available.

  1. CruisersPunish every broadside and every turn. Warspite can Devstrike enemy cruisers very easily.
  2. Spotted destroyersA useful HE or AP salvo removes a large share of their HP and protects the cap.
  3. Pushing battleshipsAim at the upper belt and superstructure when the citadel is unavailable.
  4. Low-HP targetsRemoving one enemy gun from a Ranked match usually matters more than farming 15,000 damage from a healthy battleship.
10

Mid and late game

Warspite grows stronger as firing lanes become shorter and fewer ships remain. Reduced crossfire lets her armour scheme work better, while her accuracy finishes damaged targets. Preserve enough HP to reach that phase.

When the team leads on points, do not chase a fast battleship or destroyer toward the border. Guard the route into the caps and force the enemy into the guns. When the team must recover an objective, use her tight turning circle to create a second angle instead of driving directly into torpedoes.

Speed remains the limiting factor. Begin every rotation one minute before the move feels necessary. With Warspite, a late decision often becomes an impossible decision.

The 183,045-damage battle and the 37-battle sample

Across 37 battles, the displayed results are a 54% win rate, 86,524 average damage, 2,014 average XP, 1.4 kills per battle, and 41% main-battery accuracy.

The best battle reached 183,045 damage, 3 kills, 4,467 XP, and 1,934,441 potential damage. Those numbers do not prove that Warspite is overpowered. They show how her accuracy, heal, and cruiser-killing power create exceptional results when she survives long enough.

12

Mistakes that lose Ranked battles

  • Taking the outside border and losing any chance to return.
  • Turning the hull before the turrets are prepared.
  • Using DCP on one fire while focused.
  • Showing broadside because her citadel seems difficult to hit.
  • Remaining stationary bow-in and absorbing HE and normal penetrations.
  • Shooting a full-HP battleship while an exposed cruiser can be removed.
  • Waiting for a perfect citadel instead of aiming at the upper belt.
